SUPPORT FOR ASIA 1982 Goines venue
Sir Alexander Ross, chairman of the British Commonwealth Games Federation, said yesterday he would support moves to hold the 1982 Games in an Asian country. The 66-year-old New Zealand - born international banker and sportsman was commenting on reports that African members of the Games federation had decided to support Malaysia as the venue for 1982. Two Australian cities, Brisbane and Campbelltown, are already in the field. •‘I would be in favour of any country in the Asian region which has not previously held the Games getting them in 1982,” Sir] Alexander Ross said. ‘‘We want the Games to remain at their present size so that it is within the capacity of smaller nations to hold them.” There was no official comment from the Malaysian Games contingent in Christchurch but informed sources said a telegram had been sent to their Prime Minister (Tun Abdul Razak) seeking approval to make a bid for the Games.
