GAMES “A JOKE” SAYS SCOT
(N Z.P..A. Stall Correspondent) LONDON. The Commonwealth Games athletics events are a joke as far as the British are concerned, according to the Scottish runner, lan Stewart, as quoted in the British newspaper, the “Sun”. “This is a ridiculous time of the year to hold a major championship for anyone who lives in Europe,” he told “Sun” reporter, Colin Hart, in Christchurch. “How the hell can we prepare properly in the winter at home? I haven’t run on a track since last year's A.A.A. championships in June.” Stewart says he would not be happy if he broke the world record defending his 5000 m title next week because if he was sharp as he should be, the time would be even faster. “In any case, these Games are a joke and cannot be taken that seriously with the European championships taking place in September,” he adds.
