Skilful handling of cruise liners

Large passenger liners in Lyttelton's confined inner harbour require skilful handling In an impressive performance early yesterday morning, the Lyttelton Harbourmaster Captain D. Holdem with two tugs in; attendance, and in -a strong south-west wind, put the 640 ft long 25,971-ton Shaw Savill liner; Ocean Monarch gently alongside No. 2 Wharf. She bought only 334 passengers (mostly Australian! but can carry 1200. At Lyttelton, 54 passengers will disembark. Cruising steadily for 12 months in the Pacific. the Ocean Monarch has carried 24.000 Australian and New Zealand cruise passengers. This Lyttelton visit; will be the longest time she has staved in a New Zealand port, and her first visit to the port At Lvttelton the Ocean Monarch will have the last stage of a S2l)01000 refurnishing programme completed. About 2500 yards of New Zealand carpet will be laid in her two restaurants and some public rooms. Cabin carpets are already laid. The design work for the refurnishing has been done by a Wellington artist, Colin Simon, who designed the tenth Commonwealth Games symbol. The Ocean Monarch is not the largest ship to enter the inner : harbour. The former Cunard I liner Caronia was 687 ft long and I had a tonnage of 34,183 tons • gross. A once familiar caller, the Shaw Savill Dominion i Monarch, was 657 ft long and was 126,463 tons gross.

A second cruise liner, the 9323ton Marco Polo, registered in Glasgow, and owned by the Dominion Far East Line, arrived; soon after the Ocean Monarch with 366 passengers (mostly Aus-j tralians). She can carry 376. Continuously engaged in cruising from Australia to the Pacific and Far East, the Marco Polo has British officers and a | Chinese crew. Captain P. D. ; Carlson, of Melbourne, who I formerly- came from Bourne- ; mouth, has his Australian wife I aboard.

Special express trains began running after the two liners arrived. Lyttelton was relatively quiet yesterday, but ships were gaily dressed, including the cruise liners. Traffic at Lyttelton is enjoying a smooth flow. Careful planning has paved the wav. The Lyttelton Harbour Board's traffic manager i.Mr J. B. Graham) and a Ministry of Transport traffic officer yesterday agreed that all was well. In the inner harbour naval reserve training launches are doing constant roster guard duty while naval vessels are in port. Thev are the I-laku (Lyttelton). and the Mako (Dunedin), which has just relieved the Wellington launch Parore. Also at Lyttelton is the Dutch motor vessel Straat Luzon which has Dutch officers and a Kenyan crew. The Straat Luzon is in the New Zealand, South and East Africa service. She carries 12 passengers.
