ATHLETES CLASH
Two English athletes regarded as potential gold medallists in Games field events, G. Capes and B. Williams, were involved in a clash of personalities during the pre-Games track and field meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. The incident was apparently sparked off when Capes — who is the topranked shot-putter in the Commonwealth — shouted a remark as Williams — the Commonwealth hammer record-holder — was warming up for his specialist event.
Williams was obviously not amused and stalked towards the fence separat-
ing the spectators from the competition area. Capes made further comments, threw some beer at Williams and jumped the fence as if to get to grips with his team-mate.
Other athletes persuaded Capes to return to the grandstand. Williams withdrew from the hammer contest after making two throws that did not extend heyond the throwing circle. The dispute between Capes and Williams went unnoticed by most members of the crowd. However, it was watched with interest, and concern, by a group of Games officials and journalists.
