Park proposes new pact
(N.Z.PA -Reuter—Copyright) SEOUL. President Park Chung-hee has proposed a non -agression pact between North and South Korea, “to ensure peaceful co-existence until I the eventual reunification of Korea.” But he has rejected a North Korean plan involving both a peace treaty and the confederation of North and South. “If the North Korean proposal were accepted, it is clear beyond doubt that another Korean war would break out,” he said. “The Northern plan is designed to leave us incapable of defence — to leave us disarmed — so that the North may unify the country by force. The proposed peace treaty, contains dangerous plots and conspiracies, and we should not be deceived.”
President Park explained that his non-aggression proposal involved both countries’ agreeing never to venture into military aggression, agreeing not to interfere in each other’s internal affairs, and accepting that the 1953 armistice agreement remained invalid in any circumstances.
