Hard-court title to Goolagong
(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI. The Australian star. Miss E. Goolagong, took the women’s singles title in the New Zealand hard-court tennis championships yesterday, gaining a comfortable win over the American, Miss P. Michel.
Both players lost their services early in the first set but Miss Goolagong slowly got on top and won it 6-4. In the second set, the Australian got a grip early and never let go. Her winning margin was again 6-4. In their semi-finals on Saturday, Miss Goolgong
beat Miss S. Barker (Britain), 6-2. 6-3, and Miss Michel defeated another English girl, Miss L. Beaven, 7-6, 6-4. The all-England men’s singles final went to J. Lloyd, who was too good for M. Farrell and won with plenty to spare, 6-2, 6-4.
Each ousted a Frenchman in the semi-finals, Farrell beating J. P. Meyer, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, and Lloyd defeating W. N’Godrella, 6-3, 7-5. [ Results of other finals were.—
Men’s doubles.—R. Simpson (Auckland) and R. Hawkes (Wellington) beat N’Godrela and Meyer. 6-2. 6-2.
Women’s doubles.—Goolagong and Michel beat A. Kiyomura iJapan) and W. Turnbull (Australia). 7-5. 6-0.
Mixed doubles.—Simpson and Goolagong beat H. Lloyd (United States) and Barker. 6-3. 6-4.
