GAS ‘IN NEED’

Protests in Westport (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, January 16. ! The Denniston Miner’s i Union has protested to the Westport Borough Council 'against its decision to close the municipal gasworks later this year. It was pointed out that the loss in production of 19,000 tons of coal used annually by the gas concern could affect the work force at Denniston, from where the supplies come. The union’s secretary (Mr N. Evans) said yesterday that the council might have gone to the consumers with a case for higher charges to influence the Gas Council to assist more in maintaining a project of value to the district, especially if electric power was to be conserved. Mr Evans said that it should be in the Government’s interests to have the gasworks retained while there was so much uncertainty about the adequacy of power supplies.
