TROTTING Van Glory picked to win first leg at Addington

Van Glory looks set to take the final step to New Zealand Cup class with a win in the First Canterbury Stakes at Addington Raceway tomorrow evening.

Van Glon had not been successful since beating Te Kao in the Metropolitan Three-year-old Championship in April, 1972, at Xddington Raceway, until she outsped Mill Crest at Alexandra Park on December 29. returning a mile rate of 2.5 for 2700 m.

Thai win suggested that at last she might live up to the high opinion formed of her when she was one of the top-ranked three-year-olds of the 1971-72 season.

She will meet a slightly stronger field at Addington, but the latest form of most of her rivals is not impressive •nd she should bridge the gap to open-class racing without much difficulty.

Scottish Charm has taken a long time to return to her fine form of last season, but her distant fourth to Arapaho in the Auckland Cup could prove to be the forerunnet of an early win. She raced quite well at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday, and should be all the better for that run. It will be surprising if she fails to feature in the finish.

Luck was not with' Dwayne at the Auckland Cup carnival, where he went sound races. He failed on the first night of the Wellington Cup meeting, but raced better on Tuesday when fourth in the big race, an effort which entitles him to consideration in this weaker field. Bomber Bill. Siouan, Johnny Kirk. Fait Accompli,

and Adios Adieu are others capable of getting into the I finish. Due for win Hi Foyle, which is expected to be one of the leading New Zealand contenders for Inter-Dominion Championship honours at Perth next imonth, will need to win the Second Canterbury Stakes if he is to justify the long I trip to Western Australia.

In the last fortnight or so he has had the frustrating experience of opposing Robalan, which is without doubt the most brilliant pacer in New Zealand today over distances of up to 2600 m. Hi Foyle was second; to Robalan over one mile on January 3 at Addington, and! third to him in two starts! at the recent Hutt Park meet-j ing. Young Quinn separating the pair each time. Luck in the running has more often than not been against Hi Foyle—and this will only have to change a little in his favour for him, to gain a deserved win. Sassenach, dogged by re-i curring soreness, suggested that a win might not be far away when he finished third to Robalan and Hi Foyle over one mile on January 3. If he has trained on satisfactorily since then,

he could be a threat in this; race. Globe Bay has been rather out of form since running' second to Arapaho in the New Zealand Cup in Novem-I ber. At his best, he would be; too good for most in this! race, and his handicap of; 25m is unlikely to be enough | to keep him out of the! finish. Noble Lord and Lightsey raced pleasingly at the Ash-|

burton trials on Tuesday, ;and could be the pick of the rest. i Fields. with form, for the 1T.A.8. double:— 8.40 p.m.— FIRST CANTERBURY STAKES $3500; C 9; 2600 m. 0818 Golden Guest (1) It .1.
