Spassky and Byrne open series with draw

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAN JUAN. The former world chess champion, B. Spassky (Russia), and the United States grandmaster, R. Byrne, yesterday drew the first game in their quarter-final match in the challenge series for the world title, Associated Press reported. The game was agreed a draw after 44 moves and five hours of play. Byrne, the present United States champion, had the white pieces. Eight grandmasters, including five from Russia, are contesting the candidates’ series, which will provide a challenger for the world champion, R. J. Fischer (United States), who took the title from Spassky in 1972.

The other quarter-finals are T. Petrosian (Russia) v. L. Portisch (Hungary); in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands; V. Korchnoi (Russia) v. H. Mecking (Brazil), in Augusta, Georgia; L. Poulugaevsky v. A. Karpov (both Russia), in Moscow.
