Deer hunter fined
A hunter. Robin Joseph Taylor, aged 21, was fined $3O by Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of hunting in a State forest without permission. Taylor (Mr A. D. Holland) was ordered to pay $2O solicitor’s fees and $lO witnesses’ expenses. He pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate said the case should not be associated with events elsewhere in the South Island. There was no question of poaching on Crown land on a large scale. It was a mistaken attempt to shoot a deer while the defendant was inspecting the area from a helicopter, and no shots were fired. Mr G. K. Pankhurst appeared for the Forest Service. Witnesses gave evidence that a helicopter had crashed in the State Forest near Hanmer Springs on February 23, 1973. The defendant was found on foot and carrying a rifle. He had been shooting deer on a nearby station from the helicopter, and had sighted a deer which he was about to shoot when the helicopter crashed.
