KAWARAU GOLD WINS MILE
K«w«r*u Gold, an unlucky second to Al's Holiday on Tuesday, made th* pace and held off th* favourite, Koarakau, by a short length In th* E. F. Mercer Mlle last evening at Addington Raceway.
The heavy rain influfneed officials not to use the mobile barrier and the race was run from a standing start. Kawarau Gold was quickly into stride, being followed several lengths back by Koarakau. The last-named made a game effort to overhaul the pacemaker in the straight, but R. P. Nyhan did not have to show Kawarau Gold the whip and he won quite easily by a short length. His 2min 6sec for the mile on a sloppy track was a most Impressive effort. Koarakau was unchallenged for second, finishing 10 lengths: In front of Golden Moose, which! shaded Paraville by half a head.: .Al’s Holiday, which broke after I 100 m. headed the others. SECOND WINNER The Tinwald trainer. G. A. Laing, maintained a 100 per cent record at the meeting when Macatnba won the Grandstand Handicap. On Tuesday Laing’s only starter. Sue. was also successful.
Macamba's win graduated him to the top trotting company. He made up his handicap fairly quickly, took charge early in the
run home and came on to win quite easily from Waipounamu, which shaded the dead-heaters, Dunglvin and Cee Ar. The favourite, Snoopy, was next, ahead of Frontier, which made up ground. Loyal Drift led for the last 1800 m of the U. Scott Stakes and fought on well for her first win of the season. Her performance resulted in her being Invited to be nominated for the New Zealand Standardbred Stakes on January 26. Star Guest, which led and then trailed, held on for second, a neck in front of the first-night winner, Hard Frost, which was at surprisingly long odds. Rose Chase, Levana and Pippo headed the others. The win favourite. Drum Major, was responsible for a false start and then began from ! the second line. After being last awav he finished seventh. 'The second favourite, Hanover Bay, was on the outer in the open and stopped to finish, eleventh. .
