Miss Newton wins again
(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. The Canterbury junior, Miss C. Newton, added the under 19 girls’ tennis title to her under 15 and under 17 successes when she beat Miss S. Tebbutt (Waikato), 6-2, 7-5, in the final of the Qantas championships yesterday. The boys’ singles final was a one-sided match and was won by C. England (Hutt Valley) by 6-2, 6-3, against D. Tighe (New South Wales). Other finals resulted:—
Girls’ doubles.—P. Elliott (Waikato) and Newton beat S. Chapman (Canterbury) and S. Little (Hawke’s Bay), 6-2; 3-6. 6-1. Mixed doubles.—D. Sutherland (Waikato) and Elliott beat C. Brading (Canterbury) and Newton, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Tennis.—A. Shapter, the Australian professional attached to the New Caledonian tennis team touring New Zealand, won the Hawke’s Bay men’s singles, beating A, Sutherland (Waikato), 7-6, 6-3.
