$25m cheese quota to N.Z.
< 5 Z P .4 -Reuter—Copyright * SA.X CLEMENTE (California), January 3. President Nixon has authorised imports of an additional 100 m lb of Cheddar cheese—the biggest share from New Zealand —to meet a shortage in the United States.
The amount, to be imported in the next three months, is ll> times the annual American import quota for cheddar. New Zealand will be permitted to send an extra 55m lb. Australian an additional !2m lb and other countries combined 33m lb. In Wellington. Mr S. T. Murphy, the Dairy Board’s general manager, said that the extra allocation would be worth s2sm. Last year the board exported 24 6m lb of cheddar to the United States. I he United States will continue its regular annual quota of 10m lb. of which New Zealand’s share will be 5.5 m lb “RECOGNITION" The allocation awarded to New Zealand was tn line whh the board’s expectations, and was fair and reasonable in the light of this countrv's dominant role in the international cheese trade, said th* chairman of the board (Me A. L Friis). The board had made the necescarv shipping dispositions and expected to deliver the full Quantity of rhe chee-e to arrive in the United States by the deadlin-' date. "There will be some reduc-
tions in the board’s shipments of cheese to Britain, though not to the extent of the United States shipments, since the board is able to make some other rearrangements."
