Long, hard task
WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. A group of Wellington railway enthusiasts have spent their holidays at Taumarunui slaving over a grimy relic of the steam days on the North Island main trunk line. The object ot their attentions is the giant KA945, rhe last Railwaying ned steam locomotrie used on the steep grades in the central North Island. Since 1967. No. 945. the first of the K*s—the biggest steam locomotives to run on New Zealand tracks —has sat in the weather on an overgrown siding in the Taumarunui station yard.
The engine was last lit up in 1968 when its boiler was used to provide ste«m to clean out oil bunkers in the Tautnarunui locomotive sheds. Now members of Steam Incorporated hope to get KA945 into working order and back on the main line for a triumphal run to an honourable retirement under cover in a steam locomotive museum being built at Paekakariki.
