GAMES WARM-UP

245 entries so far A total of 245 athletes from 14 countries have so far entered for the Bank of New Zealand pre-Games track and field meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on January 20. “It’s scaring me out of my wits,” the chairman of the organising committee (Mr K. J. Ryall) said yesterday. “There are still 25 teams which have not yet entered, although, of the teams of any great size, only Konya and Canada are missing.” The decision of the committee to hold many events over odd distances had drawn criticism from leading New Zealand athletes and some of the early overseas arrivals. Because of this, there is a possibility that there will be a change and at least some contests run over recognised distances.

The odd distances were originally chosen because it was thought that athletes would prefer not to show their hands over the distances they would be running in the Commonwealth Games.

Games entry.— Guyana will send a three-man team to the Commonwealth Games, provided funds become available. The three are N. Hunte (cyclist). R. Forde (boxer) and P. Archer i (shooter).
