Transfer of mental patients

Sir, — I object to the description by “November 75” of a mentally ill patient in a private hospital as “simian.” Your correspondent should realise mental illness is just that — an illness. It is not something disgraceful. Your correspondent should be aware that licensed private hospitals, along with public hospitals, attempt to share the responsibility, of looking after mentally ill people in the community. If the families of such people want, and can afford to have their relatives cared for in a suitable private hospital there is surely no reason why they should not be there. — Yours, etc., REGISTERED NURSE. January 1, 1974.
