Fait Accompli gains overdue success

The Gore pacer, Fait Accompli, gained an overdue first win for the season when he shaded Game Lad and Johnny Kirk in a spirited finish to the President’s Handicap last evening at Addington Raceway.

Fait Accompli had done mu>t of his other 1 racing this season in j Canterbury, hut luck i was not with him. He I had 13 starts for a sec- ! ond and a fourth. Last night be made one of his best beginnings and he I followed Game Lad when.; that horse raced on the out-11 side not too far from the' early leader. Fortunate. >i

Game Lad went to the front with 1200 m left. Fait Accompli joining him with 800 m to run. There was nothing between them from that point. Siouan challenged along the rails inside the final 200 m, with Johnny Kirk joining in wide out. Game Lad looked to be well ■ beaten 50m out, but he came failing by half a head i to get to Fait Accompli. Johnny Kirk was only a| nose back third, a short:

length in front of Siouan. Cornwallis came boldly from an awkward position for a close fifth, ahead of the favourite. Why Bill, which: did well to finish so close! after being well back follow-1 ing a slow start. The pace was on over the. • last 1600 m in 2:2 3-5, with! the final 800 m in 60 1-5. Bachelor Tom earned favouritism for the $BOOO Canterbury Park Cup tomorrow when he beat the fav-

ourite, Philemon, in the Stewards’ Free-for-all. Bachelor Tom was always handily placed on the outside after starting from No. 1 at the barrier, but Philemon had trouble securing a run after being blocked on the rails.

Bachelor Tom was quickly clear of Le Char in the run home and held the fastfinishing Philemon by a short length. Le Char fought on gamely for third, two and a half lengths back, and four lengths in front of Lessaday, which fought on well ahead of Easton Light, which was forced over much extra ground. Bachelor Tom’s 2min 2sec for the mile was only four-fifths of a second outride Johnny Gee’s New Zeailand record.
