Davis Cup losses
(N.Z, Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Australia’s hopes of retaining the Davis Cup next year suffered more blows yesterday.
Four young members of this year’s squad — C. Bibley, R. Case, G. Masters and R. Giltinan — announced that they will be playing on the World Championship Tennis circuit.
Davis Cup laws decree that; they are ineligible for cup play while they are committed to a professional group. They were expected to help carry Australia through the early rounds in! Asia in April and May. Already, J. Newcombe, K. Rosewall and R. Laver are awaiting an I.L.T.F. decision whether to ban players who are contracted to world team tennis, which is to begin in America in May. All three have been signed by teams in the professional group, and the feeling is that the I.L.T.F. will exclude these players from playing in! Davis Cup tennis.
