Saving petrol
Sir.—ln defence of some two-car families may I take exception to James Dyson’s letter. Speaking for ourselves, the owners of two cars, we pay insurance, registration, warrant of fitness costs and all other costs for both vehicles. There is no discount for owning two cars. In our case we do not do the, mileage of many one-car owners. We walk to the shops while ■our neighbours drive, rarely imake week-end trips while our neighbours boast of oneday West Coast trips and week-end (two day) trips to Dunedin or Kaikoura. Our monthly petrol consumption is around 18 gallons or less — proven by carefully-kept records — but some of our neighbours boast of a $2O or $3O petrol account in the midst of this fuel crisis.— Yours, etc., WALKING MOTORIST December 26, 1973.
