Riders ’feet still at risk

Many motor-cycle and motor-scooter riders seem to be ignoring a warning made early this month that they are risking crippling injuries by not wearing suitable footwear. The accompanying photo-

graphs were taken at New Brighton on a recent Sunday afternoon. On December 1, the Christchurch chief traffic officer (Mr I. W. McLauchlan) said that the wearing of jandals, sandals, or no

shoes at all on a motorcycle was dangerous. Motor-cycle and scooter riders, he said, now had to wear helmets, but it was ridiculous to wear a helmet and not suitable footwear. Statistics of foot injuries

were not kept at the Christchurch Hospital—but a spokesman said that such injuries were a problem, particularly in summer. The injuries, he said, were often fairly severe, ranging from abrasions and cuts to broken bones.
