Wiremu Auckland pick

[ “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. It is unusual that not one of the first six topweights in the Auckland cup is in the Queei) Elizabeth Handicap at Ellerslie today, but Wiremu, the seventh, is an acceptor and the very likely winner of this important cup preliminary.

Just three weeks ago! Wiremu ran one of the best-; looking Auckland Cup trials, with an easy win over 2200 m at Pukekohe. A failure at! Paeroa since was of little consequence. It was at weight-for-age and Wiremu has always seemed more of a handicap horse. ! From Pukekohe, Wiremu [is down 1 kg to 55.5 kg in the [Queen Elizabeth Handicap. [He is the top-weight, never- ; theless, required to give away |as much as B.skg to the ; bottom of the handicap. , All the Queen Elizabeth I Handicap acceptors, except [ Kia Maia, are in the cup, and I warrant close attention on [that account.

Mogador, Town Major, Rose Mellay, Aquareine, Peg’s Pride, Storming, and Manchero are a group in which there will be special interest. Each at some time or other [during the last couple of [months, has gained mention las an Auckland Cup hope.

Since first run, on Boxing Day, 1957, the Queen Elizabeth Handicap has been a good guide to the cup. Of the 16 cup winners since then. 13 tried the Queen Elizabeth, a week previously, and all except two finished in the first four.

The second leg of the double will be the Newmarket Handicap, in which Dee Light, Blue Blood and Second Sovereign look fine prospects. The track will provide firm footing. Selections:—
