Kotare Legend picked in Champion Stakes

With the exception of the Derby winner, Koarakau, and Eclipse, most of the top-ranked three-year-old pacers will meet today at Ashburton in the $4OOO New Zealand Champion Stakes. Betting will be well spread, with favouritism probably resting between kotare Legend. Gliding Light. Golden Moose, and Kawarau Gold.

Kotare Legend, which did not contest the Derby, has shown that he is in the lop flight with wins at his two latest starts. He beat Gliding Light narrowly in the New Brighton stakes on December 1. then gained a very easy win at Rangiora a fortnight later after starting from 10m. The Fallacy gelding is in such fine form at present that it will be surprising if he fails to take a prominent part in the finish.

M. Holmes who has many wins to his credit in most of I the major classic races, has had only one previous sue-; cess in this event — with, Adroit in 1958. Today he will drive the speedy Washdyke colt. Gliding Light, which outclassed a fair field at the Timaru meeting on Saturday. Gliding Light was' fifth in the Derby and he might be the one to put Kotare Legend to the test. Golden Moose. Kawarau Gold, Spry Guy, Bon Heur, King Tyrax. Master De. , and Palestine are others capable of taking a prominent part of the finish. Game Lad, Why Bill and Speedy Guest form a likely trio in the 55250 Ashburton. Cup, the main event and first leg of the T.A.B. concession double. The field is by no means large, but it includes most of the intermediateclass pacers held in high, regard in the South Island.'
