World ploughing report
The latest newsletter of the New Zealand Ploughing Association says that K. J. Taylor of Clinton. South Otago, ploughed a creditable eighth in the world ploughing contest held in County Wrexford, Ireland, in October. He tied in that position with a Norther Ireland ploughman. The points show that the Otago ploughman was fourth equal in the stubble on the first day of the contest four points ahead of the eventual winner. Paavo Tuominen, of Finland, who tied for the championship when it was held near Christchurch in 196", but the New Zealander did not do so well relatively on the second day when the leading points were higher
although he actually scored one point more than on the first day — 110 compared with 109 — and on that day Tuominen on 142 was 12 points clear of anyone else. Apparently the soil conditions were not what the New Zealand party for the' contest had expected. Mr T. F. Carter, of Greenpark. was again appointed a judge for the contest and Mr E. A. E. Fairhall was appointed the head steward. Mr Fairhall also attended the meeting of the governing board of the World: Ploughing Organisation. At .the present time it looks as though New Zealand will be asked to conduct the 1981 world contest, but the contest might be held here earlier if the Northern Ireland situation does not improve. By a very small majority it was decided that there will be no rolling of the rippling at the next world Tontest. (
