Poplar rust found

The first South I European poplar leaf r populina, has been rep The rust was found today in the Motueka nursery of the Nelson Catchment Board bv Mr A. Wilkinson, a scientist from the National Plant Materials Centre at Palmerston North. Earlier this year a similar disease. North American pop-! lar rust, affected many trees in the North Island. The board’s chief soil conservator (Mr D. G. Knowles) said there was no known way to prevent spread of poplar rust. The semi-evergreen poplar was the most susceptible, to attack, and was also awintering host. The affected trees in the; Motueka nursery were being , removed and destroyed, but this would not halt the spread of the disease.
Island sighting of the ust, Melampsora lariciiorted at Motueka. European rust was particularly vigorous in Taranaki this summer and shelter belts had been defoliated, Mr Knowles said. Two other host trees to the disease were Douglas firs and Pinus radiata.
