Games bags ‘dangerous’

Competitors at next month’s Commonwealth Games will have to be careful not to use the kit bags, which will be presented to them when they arrive in Christchurch, at any of the sports venues. The bags, which will contain more than 30 items, ranging from toothpaste to road maps, have been sponsored by Seiko, the official Games timers, and this is made clear by the wording on each bag. The secretary of the Games Organising Committee (Mr A. W. Barrett) said that the danger to the competitors’ amateur status if they took the bags with them to the sports venues had been realised, but it was not thought likely that they would be taken out of the village. However, he said, all teams would be warned of the danger.
