DEATH OF SCIENTIST
Body to go to U.S.
The body of the American scientist, Dr W. V. Vishniac, of New York, who fell to his death on the slopes of the Wright Valley, in Antarctica, on Tuesday, is expected to be flown to the United States in the next day or two. The body will be flown from Christchurch as soon as the Christchurch Coroner has given his verdict. Dr Vishniac, aged 51, a' microbiologist, who was born; in Berlin, had been in the Antarctic for five weeks. He is the third civilian scientist to be killed in Antarctica in eight years. Dr Vishniac, who was conducting scientific studies in the 7000 ft Asgaard Mountains, about 80 miles northwest of McMurdo Station, fell 500 ft down the slopes of an icefield between Mounts Baldour and Thor. Two New Zealand mountaineers from Scott Base, Messrs G. Brehaut (Timaru) and G. Kendall (Wellington), assisted in the recovery of Dr Vishniac’s body.
The last communication received at McMurdo Station from Dr Vishniac was on December 9, when he asked for a can of white gas, a quantity of fresh food, and a possible relocation of his camp to the Odin Valley this week. Dr Vishniac is survived by his wife.
