Iranian relations opened
<\.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. Iran has established diplomatic relations with New Zealand. The Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Walding) announced in a statement today that Mr Hossein Eshragtii had been appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to New Zealand. Mr Walding “warmly welcomed” the establishment of direct diplomatic relations, which was the first fruit of the discussions that the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) had with the Iranian Foreign Minister in New York last September. Mr Eshraghi is based in Canberra and will carry dual accreditation. “New Zealand looks forward to being able to reciprocate this gesture,” Mr Walding said, “although our ability to do so in the immediate future may be limited. “Iran is undergoing a period of rapid economic and industrial development and there are considerable prospects for increased trade. Two immediate fields of interest between Iran and New Zealand are the agricultural and petroleum industries; and New Zealand’s recent sales of sheep and sheepmeats to Iran are but one example of the potential in the agricultural fields.”
