Noted sprinter and coach to live in N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. A man rated by Mr A. L. Lydiard as one of the world’s best sprint coaches will arrive in Auckland next month to take up a teaching appointment at Edgewater College, Pakuranga.
He is a West Indian, Mr Lloyd Murad, a 1964 Olympic sprinter and, more recently, head sprint coach of Venezuela. “I would rate Lloyd as one of the best, if not the best, sprint coach in the world,” Mr Lydiard said yesterday. “He is a great motivator and is certain to have a great influence on New Zealand athletics. “We are going to have some mighty fine sprinters in this country in a very short time with Lloyd around to coach them.” WORKED TOGETHER Mr Lydiard spent several months in Venezuela earlier this year coaching that country’s middle-distance and distance runners. with degrees in physical education and sociology. Although now 38, he is still capable of running well under lOsec for 100 yards. “I don’t think there would be a sprinter to beat him in New Zealand even now,” enthused Mr Lydiard. “He is just the fellow we need out here.”
Apart from athletics, Mr Murad is interested in and can coach soccer, cricket, basketball and baseball.
