OVERSEAS CALLS

Bookings very heavy

Almost 2500 international telephone calls had been booked for the Christmas period with the International Exchange, Auckland, by the beginning of this week, said the Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. T. Reedy) yesterday. This was slightly more than a 7 per cent increase on the number of reserved calls at the same time last year and several of the more popular periods were now fully booked, he said.

The fully-booked periods included the following.—

To Britain: From 4 a.m. to I p.m. on Christmas Day and from 4 p.m. on Christmas Day to 1 p.m. on Boxing Day. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Boxing Day is also fully booked. The hour from 8 a.m. on December 27 is booked as is the hour from noon on New Year’s Day. To Canada: No further calls can be accepted for the periods noon to 5 p.m. and II p.m. to midnight on Christmas Day, or for any time between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Boxing Day. To Europe: Telephone time to other European countries is fully booked on Christmas Day between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. To Australia: Christmas Day calls to Australian states are no longer possible from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Queensland), 8 a.m. to noon (Victoria), 10 a.m. to noon (South Australia), and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Western Australia).
