The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) believes that black Africans are justified in taking up arms against the Governments of Rhodesia and South Africa. In a recorded interview shown on British Broadcasting Corporation television—he was interviewed by Lord Chalfont, a Minister in the former British Labour Government —Mr Whitlam was asked whether he believed that the taking of life was ever justified, and he replied: “I would acknowledge that in southern Africa, in the present circumstances, it would be.”
He described the leaders of Rhodesia and South Africa as being as bad as Hitler, and said: “I think that the war against Hitler was justified.” He added, however, that he hoped the problems of southern Africa could be solved without violence.
