Ferrymead’s gas engine
A 50-year-old gas engine, weighing between four and five tons, has been removed from the basement of a Dunedin theatre and will be reconstructed at Ferrymead where it will be a display piece. The engine, which runs on coal gas, was installed in the old theatre for use during power cuts. Members of the Ferrymead Trust think it has not been run for more than 100 hours in its life-time. It will be unloaded at Ferrymead this morning after its ride to Christchurch during the week-end as a gift from the Otago Theatre Trust, on the deck of an orchardist’s truck.
The two flywheels on the engine are each sft 6in in diameter.
The trust hopes to have the engine running every day’ of the Christmas holidays.
