Spelling
. Sir, —Miss Lowndes, retiring headmistress of Selwyn l House School, recognizes tie I need for children to learn (foreign languages early, in I the primers, when they are most receptive to rote learni ing. May I make a revolutionary suggestion? Why not teach children their own language while still in the primers? The proportion of backward readers and poor spellers in secondary schools is a national disgrace. I recently tested a dozen girls and women for a position requiring fast typing and accurate spelling. One older woman, who h~d a Standard 6 education in the "bad” Id days, got 45 words right out i of 50 (of moderate difficulty). (Few of the younger women got as many as half right. (Several didn’t even attempt ! such words as parallel, queue and analysis.—Yours, etc., M. E. RITCHIE (Mrs) Principal, Richmond Secretarial ! College. ; December 12, 1973.
