Captain S. F. Mercer, commanding officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel, the Navy’s largest shore establishment, will retire next month after 36 years service. Captain Mercer joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a seaman'boy, and serv ed in H.M.N.Z.S. Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate. Before his present appointment in 1970, Captain Mercer was Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff for three years.
