South Africans put pressure on U.S.
Press Association—Copyright) MARBELLA (Spain). South Africa will provide a strong challenge to the United States when the twenty-first World Cup golf tournament enters its final round at the Nueva Andalucia course today.
Led by a three-under-par 69 from H. Baiocchi in the third round, the I South Africans moved to within three strokes of [the Americans. G. Player added a 70, while the heavily-favoured American pair, J. Nicklaus and J. Miller, could do no better than a one-over aggregate of 145. Miller followed his record |65 in the second round with
a par 72, but Nicklaus’s putting skills deserted him and he went over par for the first time in the tournament, with a 73. Miller and Nicklaus joined Lu Liang Huan (Taiwan) in the individual lead on a sixunder 210. ANGRY MILLER The mood of the second day changed, especially with the Americans, who had looked like running away with the title. Miller’s record-breaking smile vanished as he beat his clubs into the ground and threw the ball off the greens in frustration when his putts refused to drop. Player moved to within one stroke of the individual lead, although he also found it hard to get his putts down. The South Africans are the only golfers who have not [yet gone over par. Player said they were confident of making up the leeway today and taking the cup to South Africa for the second time since its inception in 1954. New Zealand also improved on its second-round showing. S. Owen had a 71 and D. Clark a 73, for a 54hole aggregate of 444. How-
ever, they are 24 strokes behind the Americans. TEAM 420—United States (J. Nicklaus, 69. 68, 73; J. Miller, 73. 65, 72). 423—South Africa (G. Player, 69, 72. 70; H.
