Support for P.M.

The Prime Minister has been praised and supported for his unequivocal stand on sporting contacts with South Africa by the Christchurch committee of the Citizen’s Association for Racial Equality. The chairman of the association (Rev J. G. O’Connor) said C.A.R.E. also supported the Government’s action to vote on the substance of the United Nations resolutions against apartheid and racism.

He said the Petone Rugby Club’s decision to send a team to South Africa was regrettable because it then stood opposed to Government policy and United Nations decisions.

“C.A.R.E. hopes that the club will reconsider its attitude and withdraw its support for the South African apartheid system,’’ he said. “C.A.R.E. is also confident that any decision the Government may have to make regarding the Ugandan Commonwealth Games Team will be in accordance with New Zealand’s international policy on racism," he said.

Work delayed.—Members of a Victoria University geological field party, confined to their tents on a mountain in Antarctica for the last five days because of bad weather, began work on Saturday. The two women and five men in the party had been unable to carry out their scientific work on Shapless Mountain since they arrived i there last Monday. — (P.A.)
