Water polo squad

Five players have been dropped from the Canterbury water polo squad, including the international goalie, B. G. Spear. They are the victims of the policy of the selectors (Messrs M. C. Scott, L. G. McKay and B. R. Hazlett) to remove from the squad any players who did not attend practice. The other players dropped are P. G. McClure (Wharenui), and three who are still eligible for the under-21 team, G. P. Campbell. K. M. Burrowes (Wharenui), and M. L. Lewis (University). Confirming that the five had been dropped, Mr Scott, the coach, said that the squad was now down to 13 and the final 11 would be chosen from these players, “unless something unexpected happens.”

One who will probably miss final selection is J. A. Symon, making a return ta water polo this season. He will be out of New Zealand for five weeks with the surf lifesaving party in Scutl) Africa, at a crucial time ia team training. However, Mr Scott said that Symon wad the most improved in th< squad. The Canterbury team's first full-scale matches art expected to be in a triangu? lar tournament at Palm l erston North against Manawatu and Wellington.
