School staff measures
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. The Government had adopted new measures to assist with secondary school staffing, the Acting Minister of Education (Mr Faulkner) said today. Twenty guidance counsellors would begin training in February, said Mr Faulkner. Approval had also been given for the requirement for secondary schools to use 15 per cent of their staffing for relieving or part-time teachers to be continued for 1974. This was designed to protect country-school staffing. A joint working party from the Education Department ;and the Post Primary Teachers’ Association had prepared a paper containing recommendation for staffing I improvements in secondary schools. The new measures were priority items in the paper. “Arrangements have been made with the University of Canterbury and Massey University to provide training courses for the guidance counselors next year,” Mr Faulkner said. “The appointment of the 20 counsellors this year will enable the courses to begin on February ,1, 1974. ■ “No additional teachers are (required for the second proposal.” Contagious diseases One case of infective hepatitis and two of salmonella were reported to the Health Department in Christchurch .last week.
