Weather kind for Courtenay Show

3 8 i 7 The weather was kind for the Courtenay Agricultural s and Pastoral Association’s ninety-eighth show at Kirwee on i Saturday, and gate-takings were a record $660.

A record of another kind must have been set 1 by Mr Frank Johnston, 2 a past president, who spvas attending- at Kirwee for the eighty-second year. ’ A strong horse entry kept the crowd entertained for most of the day, but an innovation for the Courtenay ! show was a display at in the afternoon by 2 1 the Canterbury Axemen’s r Association. , A machinery display in - the ring preceded the livec stock parade, led by the El- ’ lesmere Highland Pipe Band. • The president of the asso- ■ ciation (Mr G. S. Barwell) said that there was no more important event in a country district than an A. and P. ' Show. It was gratifying to : see the boys and girls comi peting in the livestock sec- ; tion, as well as the produce . sections, he said. i The member of Parliament : for Seiwyn (Mr C. C. A. i McLaughlin) also spoke after s the parade. OUTSTANDING PONY The supreme champion pony

pi of the show' was Heard and Schnell’s Midnight, which the t small pony judge (Mrs E. G. O. Rutherford) said would be one ! , of the outstanding small ponies j in New Zealand. The pony was in beautiful con--8 dition on the day, and it was 1 unusual for a horse of its size to take the supreme champion ribbon, said Mrs Rutherford. Mr D. G. A. Cassells, the judge of the hunters, said he was t impressed with the over all f standard, and there was little between the performances of Miss M. Walker’s T’Daapa and ! Mrs G. K. Thomson’s Watusi. t A young rider who performed , very well on a maiden horse ’ was Miss S. Mitchell, on TinoS pai, said Mr Cassells. She had a good future in show events. , Other horse judges commented on the high standard of entries. " with the top entries able to hold - their own at any country show. The Hampshire and Dorset Down breeds were of excellent stand- " ard and had improved consider- ) ably in the last few years, said a the judge (Mr T, G. Maxwell). ' Some sheep were inclined to be ' too fat and were penalised ac- ’. cordingly. ) The prize winners were of good cutting quality and continuing to breed such sheep promised an - improved export quality lamb, j said Mr Maxwell. The judge for the Romney sheep (Mr Ivan Oakley) said that t the prize-winning sheep in the . major classes were well brought - out, but, unfortunately, entries were not large.
