AFFLUENCE HITS HOSPITALS

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Nov. 18. The growth of affluence and the demand for leisure have made great inroads into the availability of health staff, according to the Vice-Chancellor of Otago University (Professor R. Irvine). Professor Irvine was addressing a New Zealand Nurses’ Association national seminar in Wanganui at the week-end. He said that for proof any doubters should go, posing if necessary as members of the public, to

any medical institution between Friday evening and Monday morning—or between 6 o’clock at night and 8 o’clock in the morning any time in the week. “Nowadays medical and surgical wards are run overnight by nurses—often trainee nurses. Many of our institutions and, at week-ends, hospitals, serve as first-aid stations.” Professor Irvine said that the same was true for many community, general and family practices, and this situation would get worse as economic wealth resulted in more leisure, and a four-day week.
