N.S.W. coalition Govt returned

I.V.Z. Press Association— Copyright) SYDNEY, November 18. Sir Robert Askin’s coalition Government has been returned to power in the New South Wales elections with an increased majority.

The Government has taken two country seats from the Australian Labour Party and now has an estimated majority. of 13—four more than in the previous Parliament. The polls showed a swing of just over 2 per cent away from Labour. The Democratic Labour Party candidate for the seat of Gordon, Mr Kevin Harold, was jubilant last night after becoming that party’s first member of Parliament. The constituency was previously represented by the Health Minister, Mr Harry Jago. The former Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council, Mr Neville Wran, won the safe Labour seat of Bass Hill by nearly 6000 votes.

The Labour leader, Mr Pat Hills, attributed the party’s defeat to “gerrymandering” of

the electorate, and the effect of the recent power strike on voters’ attitudes. The Australia Party confirmed its position as the third party of Australian politics with a rise in support from 1.3 per cent to 4 per cent of the vote.
