Grubby Christchurch?
Sir,—“Fide Condita” should appreciate that the visitors will soon be here and that the “Garden City” image is something we can be proud of. There are some dreadful pockets where we can only rely on council bylaws to enforce a clean-up. Councils themselves have i nearly a thousand miles of j streets, most of them | bordered by people’s homes.. If we householders all tidy; our own frontage, streets will | look tidy and people can enjoy the gardens which many people are now getting ready. I Let us become involved. The maligned council employees will, we know, make an extra effort but no council or committee can begin to assess the task unless every citizen does his share, and a little more. On behalf of the city decorations committee of the Games Organisation, we ask for a major effort by people already proud of their city.—Yours etc., R. A. PROCTOR, R. S. NEWTON. November 14, 1973.
