Rangatira bookings
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Union Steam Ship Company has re-opened its advance bookings for the 9760-ton ferry Rangatira. The future of the almost new ferry which sails the 200-mile Wellington-to-Lyttelton route, has been in doubt for some time because of reportedly large annual losses. A recent plan of the company to increase fares on the ship was suspended by the New Zealand Government while the case for a fare increase was taken to a public Price Tribunal hearing. Earlier this year the company announced that it would accept bookings on the Rangatira only up until the end of April, 1974. But today the Wellington manager (Mr P. Maxwell) said that the berthing list had been extended until the end of May to cover the two weeks of winter school holidays in the South Island. ' After that the Rangatira’s future is uncertain.
