Young Ned didn't stand much of a chance. Before he knew it he was bundled into a corner by two promotion men. made "honorary singing goon” for the Commonwealth Games, and given a certificate to prove it. But Harry Secombe didn’t really mind carrying the Games banner by wearing the Games tie and the Games badge, singing the official Games song at every opportunity overseas and putting the "Come to the Games” sticker on his car window. In the photograph Harry Secombe inspects his certificate, watched by the Games Publicity Chairman (Mr D. Sanders).
Taking hold of the words of the song “Join Together,” he said he would accept it in the spirit in which it was given. “Join together . . . tsk, tsk tsk. Sponsored by the Bostik firm.” After wrapping the Games tie around his forehead and claiming to be “one of the beautiful people,” Mr Secombe lowered it to his neck and said: "It’s very nice isn’t it. Well we can all get
drunk now can we?” and let out his usual raucous goon laugh as he headed towards the door. Looking rather like a Welsh version of the Christchurch entertainer “Super Cyril,” Mr Secombe said he had lost 101 b while staying at Mount Cook after last Saturday’s show in Christchurch. He leaves today for shows at Palmerston North and New Plymouth before returning to Britain.
For 52-year-ola Harry it was all part of the show biz scene, which he has known for more than 25 years. "I’m a sort of singing symbol. I shall go out into the world and sing this symbol. I’d better wear the tie, hadn’t I,” he said, removing his apache scarf and presenting it to Mr Sanders. "I present you with this nag of Mount Cook which has been hand-knitted by a tall dwarf on the slopes of Katmandu,’’ said Mr Secombe.
