“WASTED ABILITY’
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. It 1 was not unknown for highly intelligent boys to arrive illiterate at Waikeria, said the youth centre’s deputy superintendent (Mr J. A. Evans) addressing the Frankton Rotary Club. Boys in Waikeria had the same intelligence curve as boys outside prison, but their education curve was much lower, he said. “It is not unknown for highly intelligent boys to come to us illiterate. We had a boy in the 170 intelligence group, a near genius. How did that boy slip through the net?” There was a waste of intelligence, skill and ability in Waikeria, Mr Evans said. Not many countries could afford that waste.
