S.C. exams begin

More than 30 tons of examination papers have been distributed by the Department of Education throughout the country for this year’s School Certificate examinations, which began yesterday. There are 64,650 young people sitting the examination this year, more than 56,300 of them sitting the English paper, in 476 centres yesterday. . There has been a 25 per cent increase in the number of candidates for Maori language papers and a substantial drop in the numbers sitting French, German and Latin. There are 12,414 candidates sitting in Auckland; 6057 in Wellington; 6389 in Christchurch; and 2101 in Dunedin.
