RAGS TO RICHES
Some are born lucky,! others have fortune thrust; upon them. . . . He is of a mature age, but he still enjoys his cricket, week by week. It is uncertain whether years alone, or native sagacity, have brought him to the eminence of leadership of his lower-grade club team. After the first two or I three weeks of the present season he was able to hold the reins of office lightly. He had made enough runs to maintain his reputation, he had taken quite a few wickets, at modest cost.
But the cameraderie of. club teams being what, it | usually is, the fact that a week or so ago he spent a whole Saturday without; batting or bowling did not! escape the notice of his team-mates. He was able to point to the success of the side he managed; nis players were quick to suggest that he was lookling after his batting and bowling averages with the zeal of the White House and its tapes. At all events, it was a successful afternoon for his team, i But the skipper dis- ' covered, after close of play, that he had lost a
$2O note from his hip pocket. In the forlorn hope that it might have been found, he attended i the social gathering of the opposing club. And within minutes his money had .been restored to him. ; As a gesture of goodwill. he took a ticket in a raffle being run by the (club. And within a few more minutes, he was the i owner of an enormous parcel of fresh, highquality meat, these days | worth something iapproaching its weight in (gold. Oh yes, he won the toss that day. . . .
