Seats for teachers on boards
<X.Z. Preu Auocialton, HAMILTON, Nov. 12. State secondary teachers will be represented on their schools’ governing bodies, initially without voting rights. The Minister of Education lMr Amos) has asked all boards of governors and committees of management to give teachers representation on this basis until validating legislation comes into force. No interim system of student representation is proposed "at the moment,’* Mr Amos says in a circular to the controlling authorities of secondary schools. Legislation to give effect to the Labour Party's 1972 election promise that the Government would provide for both teacher and student representation would be introduced in the present Parliamentary session, he saiti. "But as the whole system of controlling authorities in education is under study by a working party of the Educational Development Conference it seems desirable to leave the form of legislation over until it might be considered in relation to any proposals by the working party or the conference itself. Mr Amos said the teacher representative on each governing body should be elected in a ballot open to all the school’s full-time and part-time teachers.
