MINI-BUS PLAN
Support by Envo Support for a reappraisal] of plans for Christchurch i motorways, and for the pro-i posed “park and ride” minibus system has been expressed by the chairman of the Environmental Vanguard Organisation (Dr Helen Hervey). Many commuters were already walking several blocks into the city from where they had parked their cars, and the proposed “park and ride” system should therefore be of considerable benefit, Dr Hervey said in a statement yesterday. Many people now recognised that, in the interests of all, some limitation on the right to drive their cars anywhere, at any time, should be accepted, she said. Less inner city commuter traffic would mean more facilities for shoppers. Dr Hervey said that motorways which put large numbers of cars into the city would kill the city. The Master Transportation Plan assumed without question the right of the private motorist to drive anywhere he pleased at any time, she said, but the planners had not foreseen the growth of the environmental movement.
