Taxi age limit is retained
A proposal to lower the minimum age limit of taxi-drivers from 24 to 20 was narrowly defeated at the Lyttelton Borough Council meeting last evening.
The Municipal Association his sent circulars to all local bodies seeking their views on the proposal, which is supported by the Taxi Propri[e tors’ Association, concerned about the shortage of drivers. Cr G. C. Adams said he did not think 20-year-olds were
mature enough to take on the responsibility of driving taxis. Cr J. L. Baines, the oldest councillor, disagreed. He said that young people could be just as capable of driving taxis as anyone else. Cr W. S. Tredinnick said that before anyone was granted a taxi driver’s licence they had to satisfy the requirements of the police about their backgrounds. Cr D. T. Gillard said the statistics for road accidents showed that 20-year-olds were in the bracket with the highest rate of accidents. The council was evenly divided on the issue, but the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) swung the balance against lowering the age with his casting vote.
