Move to stop fires

The Eyre County Council will declare a closed fire season in the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s plantation in, McLeans Island. The secretary of the board (Mr E. R. Wood) wrote to the council requesting the move, as well as the appointment of two rural fire officers (Messrs A. C. Norton and R. J. Rains), to work within the specified area.

Mr Wood’s letter said that a patrol located a fire in the plantations towards the upstream end of McLeans island and in Eyre County on Sunday, October 21, at 9 a.m. “With the fire on an open northerly face it was fortunate that it was brought under control with insignificant damage,” Mr Wood said.
